A Day in The Life of a Business Administration Apprentice
Written by Tom, Business Admin for our Head Office Team at High Ridge Training. Tom is being trained by our sister company, Reach4Skills Training.
Hi, I’m Tom. I’m an apprentice currently studying Business Administration and working as a Business Admin Apprentice for the High Ridge Training Group. This is a day in my work life.
My work day starts at 9am, in our Head Office. This means I have to get up early in order to commute in to the office. Once here, I login to my laptop and catch up on my emails. These will usually help me to form a basis of what I need to achieve with my day, and I can fill in any spaces in my diary and plan out my day’s activities.
After this, I will typically go and make a quick cup of tea (usually the first of many) and look to my first task of the day. Generally, this will be to look over any applications that have been completed by prospective short course and apprenticeship learners, making sure that they all hold the relevant details, liaising with our Business Development Manager to verify their eligibility for the funding, and then arranging for a sign up with their future tutor.
After catching up on the enrolments, I will then turn my attention to my other day-to-day duties. These include processing invoices, providing support to our tutors and learners with their online learning accounts, checking on any outstanding actions that are required for any completed learners or pending enrolments, and provide updates as required.
I then usually go for my lunch, sometimes treating myself to a nice trip to the local chippy or buying in some takeaway to keep myself going through the afternoon.
I also look over any paperwork that comes in from tutors for our learners, checking it for compliance, before passing along to the head of training for final approval.
Once approved, I can then register the learners for their courses with the awarding bodies and with the government, so we can fund their learning and claim their certificates for them when they succeed in their courses.
My job requires me to work with all kinds of people from different sectors, and from different backgrounds too. This means that I always get to meet lots of new and exciting people and learn lots of interesting things from fields such as business, childcare, beauty, hairdressing, and crafts.
As an apprentice, I also must find time in my day to complete off-the-job activities as part of my learning, which can mean taking time out to study and complete coursework, or to learn a new activity relating to my field, or work with another member of staff to learn more about their role, and how we work together.
At the end of the day, I take a little time to look over any actions that have yet to be completed and use these to start building up an idea of what the next day will bring, leaving plenty of space for any other activities that may come through during the day.
This is what a typical day in my life looks like as an apprentice. Whilst busy, it is very rewarding, and has given me the chance to build a career and learn on the job to achieve my goals.
I look forward to completing my apprenticeship and building my career into the future.
